Avaja sat impatiently on an old tree stump waiting for Gemini while his three Pokemon happily. Well...two of them played, at least. Lilith didn't do much playing. She mostly just lay at Avaja's side, sleeping soundly. However, Avaja knew she could be ready for a battle at the drop of a pin, so he tried his best not to disturb her.
Y'vir and Zion seemed to be getting along swimmingly. Tag and Hide-and-Seek seemed to be their favorite games, and they constantly tried to get Lilith to join them. Her answer was always a smile and wave of her paw.
"Absol-sol." (I'll pass.)
He checked his watch yet again and, believe it or not, it said the exact same as it did 10 seconds ago. The morning was already gone. Avaja was beginning to worry. Maybe Gem had decided not to go through with it after all...? Maybe her mom had convinced her to stay? What if the Professor didn't have any pokemon left?
He had just gotten up to go check on her when his eyes caught sight of someone on the path. A warm sensation crept through his cheeks. His heart suddenly went for a spin, and he blinked as he tried to compose himself.
Only one person could have this sort of effect on him...

Gemini wandered from the Professor's lab to the cluster of homes called New Bark Town. Nope, nothing more to do here. Her Pokemon walked on either side of her as she found her way to Route 30, a winding, narrow path that led the way to Violet City. She strolled along the dirt path without a second thought, and Vitae followed close behind. A mental cry stopped her in her tracks.
"Ahhh!"
She whirled around to find Damien sprawled out on the dirt, looking stunned. She cursed mentally and rushed to his side. Was he hurt? She couldn't get her Pokemon hurt five minutes out of the lab. The professor would fire her. Could he fire her? No, he'd just take away her trainers license and oh crap Damien's still hurt and--
The Ralts began to wail, both physically and mentally. For such a tiny thing, he really had a set of lungs. He wasn't crying in pain, but feeding off the emotions of his trainer. Because Gemini panicked, he panicked.
Vitae was getting a headache. Deciding enough was enough, she swung the leaf on the crown of her head through the air, releasing a sweet, flowery odor. Gemini and Damien each took deep lungfuls of the stuff as their heart rates slowed and their heads cleared. Gemini couldn't even be upset with herself for losing control. She wondered, though. Was Vitae using Sweet Scent, or was this just a Chikorita thing?
She scooped up Damien and hugged him to her chest. They were finding Avaja, even if she had to carry her Pokemon though hell or high water. Minutes later, she rounded a bend in the path and saw Avaja. Grinning widely, she met his eyes and broke into a run. Didn't make it too far before stumbling oh-so-gracefully over a Riolu, though. After regaining her balance (and squeezing poor Damien a bit too tightly), she knelt to place him on the ground. She gave him a pat on the head, then stood to face her beloved as her heart thumped wildly.
"Hey."

"Z-Zi! Look out!"
Y'vir and Zion had been playing tag, and Zion hadn't been watching where he was going. Avaja flinched as both Gem and Zion crumpled to the ground in a heap. Yelping in pain, Zion managed to get to his feet and immediately raised his paws in a fighting stance, growling at the girl who had tripped over him.
Avaja immediately rushed over and held the tiny blue pokemon back. "Whoa, whoa, easy, buddy. It was just an accident." He looked up at Gemini and smiled brightly, reaching out and pulling her into a swift embrace. "Hey, stranger. Y'know, I've been waiting all morning for you."
Zion peeked out from behind Avaja's legs, glaring back and forth between Avaja and the new girl with a confused expression on his face. Y'vir strode over and watched them both curiously, and even Lilith woke up from her nap and calmly sat at Avaja's side.
"Well, you've already met Zion." Avaja indicated the snarling blue hot-head clinging to his legs. "This is Y'vir." Avaja's Cyndaquil spurted quick flames from his back in response to his name being mentioned. "And the quiet one is Lilith." Avaja ran his fingers through Lilith's shimmering mane, and she nodded curtly at Gemini.
"So...who're your friends?"

"S-sorry!" she sputtered, hugging him. "Between my mom begging me to stay and the Professor talking about biting on the flanks and Damien crying and-- Sorry." She pulled away sheepishly as he gave his introductions.
Gemini smiled warmly at each of his Pokemon, silently praying that Zion wouldn't slit her throat in the dead of night. The little guy couldn't fault her for a bit of clumsiness, could he?
The Riolu's expression said "Yes."
His Cyndaquil seemed healthy, showing off his flames at will. But Lilith caught her attention the most. Like Damien, her colors her a little... well, a lot off. Instead of grey, her body had a distinct reddish tint. Two odd-colored Pokemon in one day? New Bark Town never got this exciting. She'd have a few questions later... But first, too many sets of eyes were on her (even if most of them were Pokemon). It was time for introductions.
"Vitae is the shy one." And sure enough, the Chikorita's face took on a pink hue as she blushed. Gem would really have to work on her social skills. She pointed to the Ralts at her feet, who had sat down and started pulling strands of grass from the ground. "He's Damien. Will you say hello, Damien?" The Ralts vehemently shook his head, and Gemini sighed.
All three of them needed to work on their social skills.

"Not a bad-looking group. Vitae already seems to take after her Trainer." Avaja said with a soft laugh.
Avaja flashed a smile at both of Gem's pokemon, although the Ralts at her feet made him do a double take. Like him, she seemed to have acquired an oddly-colored variation of a pokemon. He started to ask her where she had gotten hers, but he was sure that she was wondering the same thing about his Absol.
Storytime would have to come later, he supposed.
Zion seemed to have calmed down slightly, but he still watched Gemini carefully, staying far away from her legs. Y'vir seemed to have busied himself smelling a bush of flowers nearby. However, after inhaling deeply a particularly pungent posie, his little nose waggled. As he sneezed, several tiny embers erupted from his nostrils, igniting the bush for a moment as he scrambled to put it out. Lilith strode over calmly and swept over the flames with her tail, instantly putting them out, and proceeded to chastise Y'vir for his carelessness.
Avaja shook his head in disbelief, but turned his focus to Gemini. Moving in a bit closer, Avaja stroked her cheek with his thumb and leaned in to kiss her gently.
"It's really good to see you, Gem."

"And Y'vir seems to have a knack for trouble. Who would he have gotten that from...?"
She leaned into his kiss, relaxing for pretty much the first time all day. As she brushed her lips against his, she wondered vaguely if her Pokemon would have the same "Eww, kissing!" reaction that little kids seemed to. But they paid her no mind. Maybe they accepted it as a weird human thing.
She sprung backwards from his embrace, taking up a dramatic stance and pointing her finger at him. "Aha!" she said with a silly grin. "You made eye contact. We have to battle now."
She turned to her Chikorita, who was trying to make conversation with Zion. "Ready, Vi?"
Her starter nodded enthusiastically, almost knocking Zion with the leaf on her head. "Chikaaa!"
"And Damien?"
"No." The meek voice echoed within seven heads.
"Pleeeeaaase?" Why did the Professor choose to give her such a difficult Pokemon? "It would really make me happy."
His expression was inscrutable, his eyes hidden behind a helmet of blue. But his desire for joy must have won out against his dislike for battling (or was it a dislike of Gemini?). He stood, giving a small mental sigh and scuttling over beside Vitae.
Ready for battle, Gemini faced Avaja with a smile.

Avaja's eyes were closed and his lips were still pressed together in a smooching gesture when Gemini sprung backwards and challenged him to a battle. He blinked several times. Damn. And he had been getting into that kiss, too.
He returned her silly grin with a look of faux determination, pointing at her defiantly. "You're on, powderpuff. And I'm not holding back just because you're so damn cute." He said with a smile, pulling down one eyelid and sticking out his tongue. Turning to his pokemon on either side of him, he raised a fist.
"Two-on-two, guys. Y'vir, Zion, you're up. Let's show her we mean business, yeah?"
Zion grinned and punched his open paw eagerly. "Rioooo..." (Finally...)
Y'vir sprinted to Zion's side, flames spurting from his back. "Cyndaquil-quil!" (Let's get going already!)
Tousling Lilith's fur, Avaja gave her a sad smile. "You'll have to sit this one out, Lily. Sorry. You'll get your chance next time, okay?" Lilith yawned and waved away Avaja's concerns with her paw before lying down beside him and instantly falling asleep.
Facing Gem again, Avaja gave a sarcastic bow.
"Ladies first."

Gemini scowled at his mockery. She'd show him. "Alright, you two. Growl at 'em."
Each of her Pokemon narrowed their eyes and released a loud Growl from the back of their throats. Vitae had a high pitched, feminine sort of whinny, while Damien's Growl was somewhat deeper and solely telepathic. Okay, so it wasn't that menacing, since both of the Pokemon were practically babies and pretty adorable. But since Avaja's Pokemon were new at battling, too, Gem could hope that they would fall for it.
Not wanting to give Avaja time to counter, Gemini gave her next commands. "Okay, time to be mean. Vi, Tackle Zion. And Damien, use Confusion on him."
Vitae bounded over to her new friend, and, flinching somewhat, attempted to knock him over with the full force of her body. Meanwhile an eerie red glow was coming from Damien, probably from his eyes. The glow flew from his head to the Riolu as Damien released his mental onslaught.

Avaja was shocked at Gemini's extremely quick commands, and even more surprised at how quickly her pokemon followed them. She seemed to have a natural knack at training. But then again, Avaja knew what she was capable of. She had extraordinary talent.
Apparently, some she herself wasn't aware of.
Avaja yelled out his own orders as Gem's pokemon began their assault, although he knew Zion's speed would come in handy. "Zion, use your Quick Attack on Damien!" Zion flew forward, seeking to strike Damien before he would be hit with the stat-lowering technique. However, after Zion's attack, Vitae and Damien's growls definitely hit home; Zion and Y'vir both lowered their attack power, as they immediately doubted the seriousness of this battle. "Y'vir, keep your guard up! Hit Damien with your Tackle!" Y'vir skittered forward and lowered his shoulder to ram into Damien as hard as he could, as well.
Avaja intentionally focused on eliminating one pokemon at a time, namely, the pokemon he knew could do the most damage to his team. With Damien having such potential for power, Avaja sought to remove Gemini's ace pokemon first before focusing on the next.
So what if it was mean? This was serious business! There would be time for apologies later.
Gemini's new tactic appeared to be a head-on offensive assault now, meaning his best plan would be to go on the defensive to protect his pokemon from extreme damage. She also seemed to be using the same gambit as him: focus on eliminating the powerhouse and clean up the small fries afterward. If he wasn't in the middle of a heated battle, he probably would have glomped her. The way they thought the same thing at times was...eerie. But also endearing.
Avaja shouted out his next commands. "Zion, use your Endure to hang in there! And Y'vir, tackle Damien one more time!" Zion immediately braced himself, physically and mentally as both attacks caught him full on. He clenched his teeth and began to sweat with effort as his footpaws dug into the dirt. However, he managed to stay conscious. Barely.
Y'vir glared (with whatever could be seen of his eyes) at Damien fiercely and rushed forward again, seeking to knock him out with one final blow...

Poor Damien! Gemini's heart went out to her strange, tiny pokemon. Avaja's tactic seemed to consist entirely of bullying the little guy until he could stand it no longer. And then.. what? Do the same thing to little Vitae? Her pokemon were naturally withdrawn, and Gem feared that losing their first-ever battle would put them off battling forever. She knew her boyfriend wasn't out to handicap her with two anti-battling pokemon for the rest of her trainer life--he was out to win, that's all. But sheesh. Inconsiderate much?
"C'mon, Damien!" Gem cheered him on as best as she could under the stress, but it came out sounding weak. "You can dodge those, no problem!" Although her words were optimistic, she feared Damien's psychic connection would show her feelings of helplessness.
If he did sense her doubts, he ignored them and gave it his all. Zion's Quick Attack slammed into the Ralts before he even saw it, knocking him onto his butt. Almost determinedly, he shook it off, jumping up and to the side just in time for Y'vir's Tackle to rush past him with a hot blast of wind. To his credit, he didn't even turn his head to see where the Cyndaquil had come to a stop. He watched the Riolu carefully, staying light on his toes as he prepared to dodge again.
Gem saw his mistake half a second too late. "No, Damien! The other Tackle is coming from--" Y'vir slammed into Gem's pokemon from behind, no doubt smug about outsmarting a psychic type. Damien landed face-first in the dirt, conscious but unmoving. A psychic whimper echoed throughout Gem's head. Rubbing her temples, she turned to Vitae the Bashful. "Tackle Y'vir. Twice." Somewhat detached from the action-packed battle, Gemini strolled over to Damien, who still refused to move.
"Hey, you." She grinned brightly, propping him up out of the dirt and setting him on her lap. "You gotta keep going, okay? Vitae can't do this all on her own." He shook his head vehemently as she brushed the dirt off his helmet-like hair. "I don't wanna fight anymore." Gemini's heart fell. She didn't want to lose her first ever battle, but she knew her pokemon's feelings were even more important than her own. Raising her chin high, she told Avaja "Damien has resigned from the battle." A 1v2 was bad odds, but Gemini and Vitae would give it their all.
Gemini stood proudly a safe distance behind her Chikorita, prepared to think quick and give orders against her stronger opponent. Damien sat on her shoulder, battered but content as he played with strands of her hair.
"Your move, kiddo."
