When creating a character, there's a section for starting region. As you may have figured, this is the region where your character starts out and will explore first. You must follow the routes in order and post in every location (including towns that do not have gyms).
Sub-boards are optional, with one exception - the labs. You must post in the lab before you can continue. Gyms are optional, but you must have all eight badges before you can enter victory road.
You cannot "fast travel" backwards or forwards until you have the move Fly. This meaning you cannot skip boards, even if you're going to a board you have already been to. That being said, all regions give out the move Fly by the third gym.
The move Fly can be taught to any Pokemon that can learn it, but you may only ride on a Pokemon that is reasonably larger than yourself. This is to keep people from riding Pidgey's all throughout the areas.
Once you have reached the local Dock of the region, you may travel to any other region; However you must leave all but one Pokemon behind. This single Pokemon will be a companion and cannot battle. This Pokemon counts as a seventh Pokemon. You must start out in the first board of this new region, get a new starter, and proceed as if you were just starting out. If you decide you want to go back to the region you came from (or go to another region) you must at least travel to the local Dock of your current region. Once you return to previously visited regions you can pick up progress where you left off. As mentioned before, you cannot take the Pokemon you have gained from the other regions, but you may take a companion.
You may not Fly between regions. You must use a boat.
In some cases, trainers may have to travel backwards in order to challenge a gym (such as the Eighth gym in Kanto, or the Fifth gym in Hoenn) these are the only cases in which you may "fast travel" backwards, regardless if you have Fly or not. In either your last post of the previous area or the first post at the gym you must give a short summary of how you traveled between the two places.
You may decide that you and your friend want to travel through a region together. This is perfectly fine, but you may only travel with one person. This is to keep mass amounts of people posting in the same thread.
