The clean, fresh air of the small town was refreshing to the senses. It was very different from his mountainside town of Fallarbor. The air here actually had some moisture, unlike the very dry air in his hometown. He had his backpack strapped to his back, while his covered guitar was slung over his left shoulder.
His eyes took in the subtleness of the town, how well it blended with nature. The professor of the Hoenn region was known for his field work, as well as his eccentricity. It was nice to see a professor who didn't bind himself to the lab all of the time. He could only hope the Professor was home.
The boy headed into the lab and began to look around for Professor Birch. He hoped his father hadn't contacted the professor. After all, this was Atrus' decision. If he was going to die in the next few years, then he was going to spend it exploring the world one region at a time. If the professor knew about his disease, Atrus wasn't sure if the professor would allow him to get his first pokemon and travel.
"Hello? Anyone here?" he called out to see if the professor was home.

The small town of Littleroot definitely wasn't know for it's magnificence, nor it's large stand in the Hoenn region. If anything, it was known as "that place were people get free Pokemon." Nevertheless, the people of the town were content and didn't seem to mind to lack development - they liked the quaint appeal of this town, and Professor Birch didn't argue with anyone there. Though he did spend majority of his time prowling through the nearby forests and fields, he would never travel far. Except for today.
No matter how long the aspiring training waited, there would be no response from the professor. It eventually became clear that no one was going to answer the door. It was disheartening, but things like this surely happened all the time to trainers due to the professor's impulsive behavior and lack of moral responsibility. Thankfully, he did have a lab aid who tended to these matters to ensure that the professor's name wasn't completely ruined.
The "lab assistant" wasn't what most would think at first glance. A graceful green Pokemon that appeared to be wearing a long white dress that cascaded down her body in a beautiful display of, well, beauty. The Pokemon was called a Gardevoir, and were known for being rather rare sights even in their home region. The Pokemon approached the soon-to-be trainer and smiled gently. Though her lips never shifted, she spoke. "Hello. Welcome to Professor Birch's laboratory. How may assist you today?" When she had finished speaking there was a soft echo. It slowly became clear that she was speaking using telepathy.

Atrus turned around to see the Gardevoir there, hearing the Pokemon's voice in his head. He gave a bit of a sigh, almost having expected that the Professor to be out. However, at least a Pokemon was there, and it was one of his favorites. His mother owned a Gardevoir before she passed away, and he had always seen his mother's Gardevoir as a second mother.
He was familiar with telepathy, so the voice didn't spook him at all. He offered the Gardevoir a smile and a bow of his head. "Hello there. Sorry for barging in. I came in here to meet with the professor to get my starter Pokemon and gear. I didn't know if the professor would be in or not since he has a reputation for being out in the field." he explained to the psychic Pokemon. "Do you know when he may be back?" he asked.

Gardevoir's expression remained serene as she mentally replied to Atrus. "I'm afraid I never know when he will return from his field studies. Sometimes he leaves only for a few minutes, other times he may not come back until after dark."
Gardevoir sighed telepathically.
She was often frustrated at the Professor's impatience and inconsideration. He never seemed to be around when new trainers arrived, meaning it was often her responsibility to take care of them before they set off on their adventures. She was more than happy to help the Professor in any way possible, of course, but that certainly didn't mean that she should be doing his job for him.
Gardevoir placed a hand on her chest. "However, in his absence, I am more than capable of preparing you for your journey." She indicated for him to follow. "Please, come in."
As she used telekinesis to shut the door behind him, Gardevoir began using her powers to pull objects from all over the lab and neatly arrange them in a bag. She tapped her chin in thought, glancing at him with a frown.
"...I'm so sorry, I don't seem to have caught your name."

Atrus followed the Gardevoir as she went about gathering the things that the professor would normally give to trainers just starting out. In a way it was a bit of a relief. If his father had contacted the professor, who knows how things would turn out.
He gave a smile to the Gardevoir as she asked for his name. "My name is Atrus. Atrus Rogers." he spoke to the Gardevoir in a friendly tone of voice. He figured she would need the name in order to register his ID in the Pokedex, but even if not it was only polite to give his name anyways.
A beeping sound began to emit from his watch. He had set his alarm to go off at a certain time each day so he could take his medication. The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out an inhaler with a cartridge already in it, stuck it into his mouth and inhaled as he pressed down on the cartridge before then putting it away back in his pocket. It wasn't a cure, but it was something to take care of the symptoms and slow the virus inside him down.

Gardevoir stared off into space with a smile as she finished gathering the remaining supplies into a bag and zipped it up. "Atrus...I like that name. It's nice to formally meet you, Atrus." She held the bag out for him to take. Her expression seemed a bit more serious now, but ever leaning towards her default expression of serenity. "Now...have you decided on who you want your starter pokemon to be? You have the option of a Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Whismur, or Electrike."

Atrus took the bag with a light bow of his head to her in gratitude. He unzipped the bag and perused the contents. A standard Pokedex, a case to put TM and HM CDs into, a small portable greenhouse to grow a berry plant inside of, five Pokeballs and a number of various curative supplies. Zipping the bag back up, he hung it over his shoulder.
Next was the most important choice: which Pokemon he would pick as his starting Pokemon. He wanted one that would grow to be a dual type, but not end up suffering from a crippling weakness which left Mudkip out. The water and ground typing would leave it just about helpless against grass attacks. He also wanted a Pokemon that would be able to help support him if something happened. In his mind, a Blaziken fit the bill.
He looked over at the Gardevoir and gave a nod to her question. "Yes, I've decided on a Torchic." he replied to her in a calm and pleasant tone of voice. He felt rather confident of his choice and waited then to meet his first Pokemon partner.

Gardevoir usually didn't like to read minds, as she had always been taught that it was impolite. However, she couldn't resist browsing his mind to find out why he had chosen Torchic over the others. She only took a tiny glimpse before removing herself from his mind. Atrus seemed to be quite the strategist; he wanted a dual type enhancement upon evolution, but sought to avoid a serious type disadvantage with this, as well. Swampert, the fully evolved form of Mudkip, certainly wouldn't last very long against a grass type. Gardevoir's smile spread wider. "Excellent choice. One moment."At this, she drifted off into another room, returning with a small sphere floating in front of her. The pokeball twitched slightly with life, as the pokemon inside was definitely very energetic. It suddenly opened and released its contents, as a tiny pokemon stared happily up at its soon-to-be trainer. Torchic [/u] Name: Freya Level: 5 Type: Fire Ability: Speed Boost Gender: Female Attacks: Scratch, Growl Base Stats: 310 Personality: Brave[/center] Atrus caught the Pokeball that the Gardevoir tossed to him. Taking out his Pokedex from his bag, he turned the device on and used it to gather the information about his new companion from her Pokeball. She was a female Torchic and had a rather rare ability called Speed Boost, which went nicely with her Brave nature. Brave Pokemon were known for their strength, but weren't as quick on their feet. However, Speed Boost covered this, as those who had it became faster as battles went along. The longer a battle, the more likely that she'd be running laps around her opponent faster than their eyes could keep up. It was time to finally meet his partner. With the Pokeball in his other hand, he used it to bring the Torchic out. The ball cracked open and shot a red beam of digital energy, transforming the energy into the physical form of the Torchic. Atrus knelt down as the Torchic blinks a bit and looked around before then looking up at her new trainer. "Hello there." he spoke in a friendly tone to the little Pokemon. He held out an open hand to the Torchic, seeing how the little fire bird would react. The Torchic sniffed the hand a few times, pecked it lightly once, and then nuzzled happily against it. Atrus smiled, seeing how friendly the Pokemon was. "Nice to meet you. I'm your trainer, Atrus." he spoke to the little Torchic as he rubbed the top of her head with his fingertips, at which the Torchic leaned her head up and into the affections. The little bird seemed to be quite friendly and a bit curious, which was good. "I think I'll call you Freya." he spoke before he picked the Torchic up and set her onto his right shoulder. The boy finally returned his gaze to the Gardevoir as he stood back up. "No, that should be everything. Thank you for your help." he spoke before giving a polite bow of his head to the Gardevoir. With his first Pokemon partner riding on his shoulder, the young boy was ready to head out of the lab and to his first adventure as a trainer.
